Ireland is a good place to eat, the quality of raw ingredients is very good, although there is not a great variety of food. For centuries Irish people have been cooking using a big iron pot hung over the fireplace.
Among the traditional dishes are the famous “Irish Stew”, a tasty mutton stew served with vegetables; the “Boxty bread”, a kind of crepes made with potatoes, to be accompanied with butter; the renowned “Soda bread”, a quality of bread made with cereals and milk, risen with soda; and finally “Bacon and cabbage”, a delicious stew made with beacon and cabbage.
Soups are another great expression of Irish cuisine, prepared in several ways and accompanied with a rich portion of sour cream. The most famous soups are: “Calcannon”, with cabbage and potatoes; “Chowder”, a fish soup, “Cockle Soup”, a flavoured soup made with celery and mussels, and “Bacon broth”, a vegetable soup with barley and smoked beacon.
Fish is a recurring element in Irish cuisine, and can be tasted in many different dishes, especially salmon, trout and codfish, as well as oysters and mussels. Do not miss the tasty “Grilled salmon”, accompanied with vegetables and rice; the traditional “Fish and chips”, cod-fish with French fries; and the tasty oysters of Galway.  Â
As for cakes, the most classical ones are the “Porter cake”, made with dry fruit and dark beer; the “Apple tart”, a typical apple pie prepared for Halloween, and the “Irish cream Brownies”, delicious chocolate cakes.
As bovines and sheep are bred all over Ireland, cheese is also a recurrent product in Irish cuisine. There are many qualities, ranging from the spicy “Cashel Blue” to the creamy “Cooleney”, from the famous “Cheddar” to the tasty “St. Killian”, “Poulcoin” or the typical smoked “Durrus”.
Beer stands out from the rest of drinks. There are many qualities of beer produced on the island, for instance the worldwide famous “Guinness”, dark and with intense flavour. Or the “Smithwick’s”, typical of Kilkenny and characterised by a red rubin colour with a caramel taste; the “Caffrey’s”, a dark, creamy and liquorice-flavoured beer produced in Northern Ireland; and finally the typical beer made in Cork, the “Beamish”, with a thick foam.
Beside the beer, Ireland is also known as the land of whiskey. The name of this alcoholic drink comes from the Gaelic word “uisce beatha” , life water. The most famous quality of whiskey is  the “Jameson”. Other good whiskeys are the “Bushmills” (which distillery is worth to be visited) and the delicate “Tullamore”. Other drinks made from whiskey are the famous “Irish Coffee”, an American coffee laced with whiskey and topped with cream, and “Whiskey  Cream”.
